After a season that began with growing pains and uncertainty, West Springfield found its identity at just the right time—and didn’t look back. The Spartans leaned on their defense early while searching for answers on offense, but once things clicked, they surged forward. That late-season momentum has carried through the offseason, with 95% of the coaching staff and 18 of 22 starters returning. Now, with continuity, experience, and a chip on their shoulder, this group believes it’s time to take the next step.
The Spartans are embracing a more flexible approach offensively. While they’ll always have their roots in the spread, expect to see more multiple formations and personnel groupings, aiming to balance their consistent run game with an efficient passing attack that targets the middle of the field.
Replacing a player like Mark-Anthony Whyte—who accounted for nearly 1,800 yards and 20 touchdowns—is no easy task, but few teams are as equipped to reload. Brady Davies steps in as the feature back and brings credentials that speak for themselves. A 4-year starter, all-state linebacker, and the team’s leading receiver last year, Davies is poised to take on a huge workload. The offensive line supporting him is loaded with returning talent, including three-year starter Ayaan Mizra and fellow senior Micah Dargan-Coley, forming a physical interior that will be a strength on both sides of the ball.
Quarterback Scott Lewis enters his senior season with a 4-2 record as a starter, a 65% completion rate, and 17 combined touchdowns. He’ll lead an offense loaded with options, including breakout candidate Jevon Austin. The junior wideout had four touchdowns as a sophomore, bulked up with a standout offseason, and is now one of the strongest skill players on the team. Add in returning all-region defensive back and two-way contributor Sam Heradia, and you’ve got a group with proven production and serious upside.
Tight end Anthony Bello, committed to Monmouth, continues to refine his skills after converting from quarterback. Junior Brennan Telfer will contribute at tight end and linebacker and already holds an offer from Virginia Union. In the secondary, Gavin Price is a fast, aggressive junior who had a pick-six to seal a win over Fairfax last year and is poised to take a leap. Keep an eye on rising sophomore Erhem Robinson, who is expected to play significant varsity snaps on defense, and senior Evan Shorter, a two-way threat ready to make noise after an injury-plagued junior year.
There’s a quiet confidence in the building—some of it driven by how last year ended, and some by what this group believes they can still become. This is a team with a balanced identity, depth in the trenches, and a backfield ready to prove the doubters wrong. The players walk with purpose, and the schedule will test them early, but the Spartans seem ready for it.
They won’t have to wait long to see where they stand. A scrimmage slate that includes North Stafford and Colonial Forge leads right into a week three showdown with state runner-up Madison. The standard in Northern Virginia football is clear—and West Springfield isn’t shying away from the challenge. They’re chasing it.
