Mount Vernon heads into 2025 with a new but confident outlook under head coach Drew Holland. While last year’s campaign didn’t yield as many wins as they’d hoped, Holland is optimistic about what lies ahead—and impressed by the mindset he’s already seen in his squad. “The kids are enthusiastic, determined, and dedicated to football,” he said. That hunger has fueled a productive offseason, including strong showings in 7-on-7 competitions and growing buy-in across the roster.

Two matchups are already circled: Hayfield and West Potomac. Both are emotional games and measuring sticks for the team’s progress. After graduating starting quarterback Hudson Grimsley, the Majors are in the middle of a position battle to determine who will take the reins under center. But the offense still returns plenty of firepower.

Mount Vernon’s offensive skill group looks especially deep, with multiple returning contributors. Matthew Moret (WR/KR/PR), CJ James Coleman (WR/CB/RB, 5'10", 170), Arion Cole (WR, 5'10", 175), and Dawit Volcy (TE, 6'2", 210) will lead a talented unit capable of big plays. Holland says this year’s team is “experienced” and expects them to be more aggressive on offense and more conservative defensively.

As the season kicks off, the focus will be on creating explosive plays on offense and swarming to the ball on defense. If early signs hold true, Mount Vernon may be a team that surprises people this fall—especially with how far they’ve come in just one offseason.
