McLean made strides last fall, building a foundation for the future with a roster packed full of young talent. A late-season win over Wakefield stood out to head coach Joe Cockerham—not because of the score, but because of who was on the field. The Highlanders leaned on freshmen and sophomores in key moments, which bodes well for a program that’s ready to take the next step.
The Liberty District remains a gauntlet, but Cockerham wouldn’t have it any other way. “The best thing about the Liberty is that anyone can beat anyone on any given Friday night,” he said. To prepare, McLean’s ramped up its non-league schedule, swapping out opponents like Lewis and Meridian for the likes of Robinson and Falls Church. The belief is that iron sharpens iron—and they want to be ready to win big in November.
Aidan Reid headlines the roster. The 6’5”, 235-pound tight end and William & Mary commit has been a steady playmaker for two years, including a clutch touchdown against Herndon back in 2022. This fall, the offense will run through him. At quarterback, Christian McNeill returns after transitioning from linebacker last offseason. His dual-threat ability adds a layer of unpredictability to an already promising unit.
There’s size and talent on the offensive line, including junior Blake Noggle, a 6’2”, 265-pounder the staff expects to land at the next level. At wideout, Malcolm Andrews (5’10”, 180), an all-district selection as a sophomore, is healthy and ready to make an impact again after missing most of last year. Senior Steven Conroy and WR/DB Michael Babalitis bring versatility, while younger players like Maximus Lotfi will add depth across both sides of the ball.
On defense, the linebacker group could turn some heads. Juniors Justin Ball and Lotfi, along with seniors Owen Smart and Jack Tanner, bring a mix of experience and athleticism. Junior DE Alexander Cafer (6’3”, 215) gives the Highlanders a pass-rushing threat, and corner Nick Rydzewski will play a vital role in the secondary.
There’s new energy on the sideline too. Joe Lokke (a McLean alum and former WR at Randolph-Macon) will take over as offensive coordinator, while Reese Williams joins as the defensive coordinator after coaching in the Florida 6A state semifinals. The scheme remains 11 personnel on offense and 3-4 on defense—but expect to see new creativity in both units.
McLean opens against Chantilly and then jumps right into a pivotal Liberty District showdown with Washington-Liberty in Week 2. If things click early, this could be the most complete Highlander team in years—and a group capable of competing with the best in Northern Virginia.
