George Mason Football is back, and the energy is palpable. After a promising 7-1 season last year, the Patriots are more motivated than ever to push for excellence under the leadership of Head Coach Aaron Raffle. “Last season, we ignited a fire in these guys. I promised an 8-0 season, and we went 7-1,” said Raffle. The coach's confidence is contagious, and it’s clear that the team is hungry for more.
The Patriots have been busy during the offseason, strengthening their roster through heavy recruiting efforts and fostering team unity. According to Raffle, the team has a “dedicated core returning,” which has been key to their preparation for the upcoming season. The offseason has seen the players working together and building bonds, which was evident during their first organized team activity (OTA). “There was definitely some energy on that field,” Raffle remarked, setting the tone for what fans can expect this season
.
Offensively, the team is loaded with talent. The Patriots’ passing game, which was successful last season, will be complemented by a renewed focus on the running game. Key players to watch include Cam Esparza (Hayfield) and Theo Assan (Woodbridge Freedom) at receiver, along with Basil Hasan (Woodson) and newcomer Korey France at running back. Quarterback Cole Jasmin returns to lead the offense, though he’ll be competing with young prospect Luke Windett (William Monroe) for the QB1 spot. The offensive line, anchored by returning stars like Yahdi Yohannes(West Springfield), Matt LaClare (Freedom South Riding), and Sean Gallagher, will be bolstered by new recruits Jackson Thompson and Jordan Phillipe-Guide, who are expected to add depth and power to the running game.
On the defensive side, the Patriots boast a formidable lineup. Defensive Back Vinny Gaskin from Robinson and LB Darion El from Wakefield High School are just a few of the players ready to make an impact. The team also welcomes DB Jason Yi from Westfield and Nate Stephenson from Osbourne Park along with , and Matt LaClare. LB Colin Tran from Stonebridge , round out a defense that looks set to challenge any offense it faces.
Coach Raffle credits his seasoned coaching staff with the meticulous preparation that goes into each game. They focus on mastering fundamentals and adapting their systems to counter each week’s opponent. “We study a lot of film and try to prepare to win ‘situations,’” Raffle explained. This attention to detail, along with consistent conditioning and strength training, ensures that the team is always ready to perform at its best.
Balancing academics with the demands of football is a challenge, but one that George Mason’s club football team handles with a flexible practice schedule that accommodates players’ other commitments. The coaching staff understands that many players have jobs, families, and evening classes, so practices are staggered to fit these various responsibilities.
The Patriots face unique challenges as a club team, particularly when it comes to ensuring that their opponents can field a team. Despite these hurdles, Raffle sees great advantages in the NCFA, noting that it allows players to compete at a high level while maintaining a manageable time commitment. The team’s schedule this season includes not only NCFA opponents but also NCAA teams, offering players the chance to showcase their talents on a larger stage.
Financial challenges are also a reality, with travel and equipment costs putting pressure on the program. However, through creative fundraising efforts and partnerships, the team continues to thrive. “We try to do as much fundraising as we can to offset those expenses,” said Raffle, who is always on the lookout for new ways to support the program.
Looking to the future, Coach Raffle is focused on recruiting and expanding the program’s visibility. The goal is to create a buzz around George Mason Football, making it a program that local high school athletes aspire to join. The team is also committed to engaging with the Mason student body and local community, participating in on-campus events and seeking out opportunities to contribute to the community.
As the season approaches, the Patriots are not just preparing for the games ahead—they’re building a legacy. “I want these guys to be proud of what they’ve accomplished on the field and off,” Raffle said. With a growing program, a dedicated team, and a supportive community, George Mason Football is poised to make waves this season and beyond. The Patriots are ready, and their sights are set on greatness.
