Broad Run took a noticeable step forward last season, showing they could battle for all four quarters against some of the area’s strongest programs. This year, the emphasis is on closing—turning those tight matchups into statement wins. That goal has shaped their entire offseason, and there’s a quiet confidence in the building that 2025 could be something special.
Head coach Zachary Barnisky and his staff made team bonding and leadership development a priority, bringing in the Lead 'Em Up program to build stronger connections throughout the roster. It’s already paying off—coaches have praised this senior class as one of the hardest-working and most committed they’ve seen.
Broad Run opens with a big rivalry game at Briar Woods, followed by matchups with Riverside and Colgan (Woodbridge), before diving into a district schedule that includes standout opponents like Heritage, Loudoun County, and Loudoun Valley. There's no rest week on this slate—each game will demand Broad Run’s best.
The team will have to replace some key production on offense, including Devin Ellison, the Dulles District Offensive Player of the Year who’s now at Shepherd University, along with three linemen now playing college ball—one at Bentley and two at Christopher Newport. But there’s depth and hunger ready to step in.
At tight end, the Spartans boast a versatile trio in Mason Schewnke, George Nicholson, and Logan Anthony—all capable of making a serious impact. The running back duo of Luke Brandenburg and Kai Theeke is expected to share carries and both could be in for breakout seasons. At quarterback, Tyler Coy has emerged as the frontrunner, bringing leadership and poise to the position.
There’s no shortage of playmakers on the perimeter either. Ben Barrett, Gage Young, Caleb Pavlus, Ty Brandenburg, and Kaden Orange-Foreman all figure to see time in the rotation, giving Broad Run multiple weapons to scheme around. Defensively, linebacker Jack Ahlberg and defensive lineman Brayden Willis are expected to set the tone.
This is a team that thrives on accountability and internal competition. Coach Barnisky said it best—if this group brings the same intensity to practice as they plan to on Fridays, they’ll be tough to handle come fall. With the leadership, depth, and drive in place, Broad Run enters 2025 as a program on the rise.
