The Yorktown Patriots are gearing up for a new season in the Liberty District, looking to build on their momentum from last year's strong finish. With a 7-5 record, the Patriots demonstrated resilience and competitive spirit, highlighted by a thrilling playoff victory against South Lakes.
Coach Bruce Hanson has been working diligently to prepare his team during the offseason, focusing on building cohesion and strength. The Patriots face the challenge of a highly competitive Liberty District, with Washington-Liberty emerging as the team to beat. However, Yorktown is ready to rise to the occasion, knowing that each game requires their best effort.
This season presents the challenge of filling key positions, especially on the defensive side, where only four players return from last year. Nonetheless, the offense looks promising with seven returning starters. Among the standout seniors are Aidan Vroom, a 6'4", 300-pound lineman known for his strength and agility. Max Troiano, a 6'2", 215-pound tight end and defensive lineman who brings versatility to both sides of the ball, contributed significantly last season with 5 receptions for 54 yards.
Finn Luca, a 5'11", 185-pound wide receiver, defensive back, and returner, is the team’s multifaceted playmaker, capable of stepping up in crucial moments. Last season, Finn had 25 receptions for 492 yards, averaging 19.7 yards per catch. Drew Morgan, the 6'2", 185-pound quarterback, is set to lead the offense with his strong arm and accuracy. Morgan threw for 654 yards and 5 touchdowns last season.
In the backfield, Coby Casalengo and Owen Woodward form a dynamic duo, combining strong running and reliable pass-catching abilities. Casalengo rushed for 634 yards and scored 6 touchdowns, while Woodward added 294 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns. Both players are expected to make significant contributions this season.
The Patriots' offseason commitment to training and team unity sets a strong foundation for the upcoming season. Coach Hanson is confident in the blend of experienced seniors and promising young talent, which he believes will keep the team competitive. As the season approaches, Yorktown is poised to build on their playoff success and compete for the top spot in the Liberty District.
