The South Lakes Seahawks are riding high as they prepare for the upcoming football season. Coming off an undefeated regular season and a Concorde District championship—their best record in 25 years—the Seahawks are looking to build on their historic success under the leadership of Head Coach Jason Hescock. Last year’s team set numerous records, showcasing the potential and resilience of the program. Although their playoff run was cut short in a heart-wrenching 6-7 loss to Yorktown, the lessons learned from that season have set the stage for even greater heights.

Coach Hescock, now in his sixth season, has seen the program transform and reach new levels of excellence. Reflecting on last year, he emphasized the importance of maintaining peak physical condition, noting how injuries impacted their playoff aspirations. "We learned how high our program standards can be raised and how consistent hard work can elevate our team," Hescock said. "Replacing 30 seniors will be a tough task not only on the field but off the field as well."

The offseason brought additional highlights for South Lakes, including success across various sports. "Not only did football have success last year, but many sports across multiple seasons," Hescock shared, highlighting the achievements of the basketball and baseball teams. Seven football players have committed to playing college football, further underscoring the program’s ability to develop talent.

This year’s schedule is packed with challenges, especially within the competitive Concorde District. Key matchups to watch include games against Robinson and Mt. Vernon, as well as every district game. "Every week presents a different challenge, and we are anxious to see how our 24 seniors respond to this year’s challenges," Hescock noted. He also mentioned that new coaches in the district bring unknown challenges and matchups, adding to the excitement of the season.

The Seahawks will miss several key players from last season, including standout quarterback Nick Harris and versatile wide receiver James Zschunke. The loss of these and other key contributors will be felt, but Coach Hescock is confident in the next generation stepping up. "We are looking forward to seeing how our younger players rise to the occasion," he said.

One player to watch is Alec Saunders, who is poised for a breakout season. Saunders, a 5'11", 200-pound athlete, is set to make a significant impact as both a wide receiver and running back. "Alec didn’t get to play his junior year due to getting mono to start the football season, and then being hampered by a hamstring injury," Hescock explained. "But he’s labeled as an 'Athlete' for us playing WR and RB, and he’s a difference maker with the ball in his hands."

As the Seahawks gear up for another exciting season, anticipation is high. The lessons of the past, combined with the talent and determination of the current roster, promise a thrilling journey for South Lakes under the steady guidance of Coach Hescock.

Key Player to Watch:

  • Alec Saunders (WR/RB)
