"Last season, I wasn’t here, but from film, I learned we have some experience returning in key places," said Coach Darryl Overton as he takes over the reins of the Hayfield Hawks. Overton, coming off an impressive tenure at Freedom High School where he led his team to two consecutive 6A state championships, is ready to infuse that winning spirit into the Hayfield program.
Coach Overton is quick to praise the positive energy and supportive atmosphere at Hayfield. "The school's teachers, administrators, and students are phenomenal, and there's a great vibe here," he shared. This uplifting environment has bolstered the team's unity and determination, especially as they've gotten stronger physically in the weight room. "All the outside noise has brought us closer as a team," he added, hinting at the challenges and distractions they’ve had to overcome together.
The Hawks face a formidable schedule this season, featuring non-district games against playoff-experienced teams like West Springfield and South County, and a tough matchup with Riverdale, a top private school. These games will test the Hawks early and often, but Coach Overton sees them as crucial for building resilience and character within the team.
Adjusting to a new coach and system can be daunting, but Overton views the departure of last year's seniors as an opportunity for new leaders to emerge. "We don’t know the kids we lost, but it forces us to grow up quickly and establish who will be our leaders this year," he explained.
Key players to watch this season include Jeffery Overton Jr., the reigning state player of the year and a Virginia Tech commit, who promises to bring his exceptional skills and leadership to the field. Ian Hall, a Navy commit and standout outside linebacker, along with Mateo Kamarack, a versatile linebacker and defensive lineman, will be crucial on defense. The offensive side features Kardell Hunt, a dynamic wide receiver, and Nate Childs, a reliable offensive lineman. Devin Winters, a defensive back, rounds out the list of impact players who will be pivotal to the Hawks' success this season.
The Hawks are poised for a challenging but promising season under Coach Overton's leadership. As they navigate their demanding schedule and integrate new leaders, the Hayfield Hawks are set to soar to new heights.
