Lake Braddock High School's football team is ready to compete for the region title again after securing their first region championship in a decade. Coach Mike Dougherty looks back on the previous season, noting it was a mix of triumphs and disappointments.
"Winning our first region title in 10 years was a tremendous achievement and marked an overall great season for us," Dougherty emphasized. "However, we felt like we underachieved in the state playoffs, picking the wrong day for an 'off' performance. At that stage of the season, anything less than your best equals season over."
As the Bruins gear up for the upcoming season, Dougherty acknowledges the tough road ahead. "Our schedule has many challenges. At least five teams could be region champions. We will be tested early by Madison and Westfield. Our conference rivals, including South County, West Springfield, and Fairfax, are perennial powerhouses," he explained, highlighting the competitive landscape they face.
Lake Braddock had quite a few players move on to play college football, so reloading is no easy task. Dougherty highlighted their impact, saying, "Ben York (UVA), Ryan Matheny (Ohio U), Lucas Matheny (CNU), Aaron Iduma (Salisbury), Yazan Elhag (VU), Jack Rubino (Hampden Sydney), Carson Gallant (Shenandoah) will all be missed. Their dedication and skill have set a high standard for our program."
Key returning starters include Mike Suris (QB, 6'0", 190 lbs), Ty Jackson (QB, 6'3", 220 lbs), Trent Pane (DL, 6'1", 260 lbs), Titus Akol (DL, 6'3", 260 lbs), Marwan Diab (OL, 6'6", 290 lbs), Kai Austin (WR, 6'0", 180 lbs), Xavier Main (LB/WR, 6'3", 225 lbs, committed to William & Mary), Zack Hibner (TE, 6'1", 210 lbs), and JT Bourdeaux (RB, 6’3", 210 lbs). These players will be pivotal in the Bruins' quest to return to the state playoffs.
Heading into the new season, the Lake Braddock Bruins' offense looks promising with a solid core of returning players. Junior quarterback Suris will be a key player to watch, having completed 125 of 191 passes for 1,610 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. His performance showed consistency and accuracy, maintaining a completion rate of .654. Complementing Suris in the backfield is Bordeaux, another junior, who carried the ball 127 times for 759 yards, averaging 75.9 yards per game and scoring 8 touchdowns. On the receiving end, junior wide receiver Austin will be a significant threat, having recorded 66 receptions for 1,045 yards and 8 touchdowns, averaging 80.4 yards per game. Tight end Hibner, a sophomore, also proved to be a reliable target, with 29 receptions for 310 yards and 6 touchdowns.
With experienced leadership and a roster of talented athletes, Coach Dougherty and the Lake Braddock High School Bruins are ready to make a deep playoff run.
